Remembering Carmen Martínez Sierra


Carmen Martínez Sierra was born on May 3, 1904 in Madrid, Madrid, Spain. She started working in the theater at age 16. Her first years as an actress elapsed on stages in operas such as “Tosca” (1952), “Madame Butterfly” (1953) and “La canción del amor mío” (1958).
 
In the late 1960s, she focused on the interpretation, combining film, theater and television. On stage, she appeared in “The Matchmaker” (1960 ), Thornton Wilders “Or So (if you think )” (1956 ). In addition, she was part of the cast, who under the command of Miguel Narros staged “La Marquesa Rosalinda”, the “Valle-Inclan” in 1970 in the Spanish Theatre. Other pieces in which she participated in, included the debut of Spain's strip-tease (1970), by Antonio Gala, “El visón volador” (1974 ), directed by Jaime Azpilicueta and “¡Sublime decisión!” (1984 ), by Miguel Mihura along withVerónica Forqué”.
 
She didn’t debut in the cinema until the age of 53, with the film “El Tigre de Chamberí”, directed by Pedro Luis Ramirez and starring Tony Leblanc. Soon she specialized in comic roles, as long as a supporting actress. Among her more than 100 titles which she worked with major Spanish directors, as Basilio Martín Patino, Juan de Orduna, Pedro Maso, Antonio Pedro Lazaga and Mercero. Her only Euro-western was in 1971’s “The Legend of Frenchie King”.
 
Carmen television career began in 1957, the first year of the medium, in the work ‘Llegada de noche’, directed by Juan Guerrero Zamora, and she appeared in such popular series as ‘Felipito Takatun’, giving life to the mother of Joe Rigoli, ‘La casa de los Martínez’, ‘Anillos de oro’, ‘Verano azul’, ‘Los ladrones van a la oficina’ and ‘Manos a la obra’.
 
She died in Madrid on November 6, 2012 at 108.
 
Today we remember Carmen Martínez Sierra on what would have been her 110th birthday.
