Who Are Those Gals? - Grete Berger




Grete Berger was born on February 11 1883, in Jägerndorf, Sudetenland, Austria-Hungary. She was educated an took drama lessons from her teacher Rosa Roth in Vienna. Her stage debut was on September 1, 1903 in Berlin at the New and Little Theatre. In 1904 she was employed at the German theater under Max Reinhardt. Here she acted in youthful character roles. In 1911 she undertook with Reinhardt ensemble performances of the play “Oedipus the King” and toured abroad in Prague and St. Petersburg. Other roles included “A Midsummer Night's Dream”, the title role of Hugo von Hofmannsthal's “Elektra”, Désirée in Richard Beer-Hofmann's “The Count of Charolais”, Marikke in Hermann Sudermann “Bonfires” and Rachel in “The Jewess of Toledo”. From 1913 to 1914 she appeared in several silent films and was a female protagonist in the famous classic “The Student of Prague” and her only Euro-western “Evinrude” (1913) as Margaret. She then returned to the stage and played throughout 1928, as the nurse in a production of “Romeo and Juliet”. By the 1920s she appeared in some major film productions but only in very minor roles  with her last appearance in “       Das Land ohne Frauen” (1929). Grete died sometime in 1930.
